Evolutions uncovered: The new MyGreatWorld.com

Relaunch of the free and popular photo community - On August 25, 2008, after almost a year of systematic and thorough testing, MyGreatWorld.com has hatched from a working BETA into the wild of the internet. And without exaggeration one can say that both, design and range of features have significantly improved.
At first glance users will note that the saluting map of the world is now designed in the vivid whites & greens which match the whole vibe of the site. Who does not like this colour-scheme can try out alternatives within the 'Personal Profile' where by and by different designs will be presented to the members, although it is almost certain, that the new 'Nighttheme' will rise to instant glory.
For all pictures uploaded after August 25, EXIF-data is now available (whenever included in an image), allowing the interested photo-enthusiasts a more technical insight. Comments and Personal Messages have been separated and clearly arranged for a faster access.
Under the hull of the interface, an efficiently tweaked database-engine was fired up and carries out the requests within the mainframe of a new and completely overhauled structure. By this, the overall speed of the site -- which has already been amazing due to the lack of popups, gadgets, etc -- was distinctly boosted.
MyGreatWorld.com now allows do-follow links to external sites on all pages as long as there is a gain in information on the respective topic (which might be a continent, region, city, point-of-interest, landscape or even a single picture). By this, the idea behind MyGreatWorld.com, to combine visual impressions with categories and a database of time and place has opened another quality-source for reliable information.
And YES: MyGreatWorld.com still is and always will be a FREE service.

Countdown to Relaunch - Every BIT Worth the Wait!
Many striking enhancements have improved the platform visibly and technically -- below the surface and deep within the structure of MyGreatWorld's database as well as catching the eye at the very first sight, such as the EXIF-data that every newly uploaded picture will now show.
Still, the best thing about this open and alternative photo-community remains fundamentally unchanged: MyGreatWorld is - and always will be -- FREE to use with all its features!

Press Release MyGreatItaly
Travellers and residents alike can now upload their pictures of this astounding country, which is blessed with an almost unrivalled diversity in nature and culture: Rome, Milan, Naples, Turin, the Sicilian Cosa Nostra, San Marino and the Vatican City - Italy has everything to fascinate visitors for more than a single holiday and impressions of this amazing country are always an eye-catcher.
With www.MyGreatItaly.com now opened for the public, the highly praised MyGreatWorld-Project takes another step to mapping the world with photos, inviting all fans and travellers to share their impressions of Bella Italia with the community.
At the main page of www.MyGreatWorld.com users find a reduced and well-planned menu without dispensable and unwanted gadgets or pop-ups. All elemental functions are within easy reach and it is not before the choice of a country that the second (and more detailed) menu expands, allowing new users to register and old users to login.
Besides the time (year or even better: year & month) and the category of a picture any further description a user enters will be additionally indexed for key-words. The same goes for the photo's title. Structures and designs are straightforward and comprehensible.
Creating new spots (or uploading to those already generated) within the map-based and simple upload-section is a breeze - as is the plain searchbar that will produce the desired results in most cases. The advanced search, on the other hand underlines the fact that the sites of MyGreatWorld.com offer more than a mere pool of pretty pictures:
It allows for combinations of various search-parameters including the time of the capture, the motive, the spot, key-words in title or description and even the filtering for a certain photographer.
Italy’s unrivalled landscapes and its ancient cities with their narrow passages and unique cultural background make visitors wonder with awe - and MyGreatItaly.com is a welcome way to present this beauty: For visitors. For residents. For friends. Worldwide.

Greece is the perfect country for families as well as for backpackers who rightfully commend the open-hearted cordiality and hospitality of the Greek and their strong belief in tradition and family.
With a unique language and rich culture dating back at least 3,500 years, Greece has performed drama and tragedy a long time before many other countries. Press Release MyGreatTurkey
Turkey is one of the oldest continually inhabited areas on the whole planet - and a photographer's dream come true: Rooted in Western as well as in Eastern tradition, history has left visible footprints all over this country, vivid reminders of early Byzantine architecture and centuries of Ottoman influence.
Blessed with an almost unrivalled diversity in nature and culture Turkey has everything to fascinate visitors for more than a single holiday and impressions of this amazing country are always an eye-catcher.
With MyGreatTurkey.com now opened for the public, the MyGreatWorld-Project takes another giant step, inviting all fans and travellers to share their impressions of and with the world.
At the main page of MyGreatWorld.com users find a reduced and well-planned menu without dispensable and unwanted gadgets or pop-ups. All elemental functions are within easy reach and it is not before the choice of a country that the second (and more detailed) menu expands, allowing new users to register and old users to login.
To make the database work, users are asked for the time (year or even better: year & month) and a category their picture fits in best. Any further description a user enters will be additionally indexed for key-words. The same goes for the photo's title. Structures and designs are straightforward and comprehensible.
No matter if users want to document the famous river Euphrates, Lake Van or Mount Ararat, creating new spots (or uploading to those already generated) within the map-based and coherent upload-section is a breeze - as is the plain searchbar that will produce the desired results in most cases. The advanced search, on the other hand underlines the fact that the sites of MyGreatWorld.com offer more than a mere pool of pretty pictures:

What's worth visiting in Istanbul? Where to stay in Izmir? What to do at the Turkish Riviera? What to avoid at the Black Sea? Users may depict their recommendations on MyGreatTurkey.com - For tourists. For residents. For friends. Worldwide.
The change of Turkey’s face is sometimes subtle (and sometimes not). It becomes obvious by comparing the chronological advancement in housing and construction and the varying styles in design and architecture. The further an observer is travelling back in time the more evident growth and progress become. This might be fortunate -- but it is not by default.
Combining these different approaches (to a vast mass of digital photography laying dormant on harddrives around the globe), www.MyGreatTurkey.com opens up its services to the community to build an online-database of literally any spot in this country. Even the very streets users are living in are subject to continuous changes - and to make these trends visible is one of the goals of the site.

Press Release MyGreatIceland
Tourism, Cars, Traffic
Critically acclaimed database and alternative photo-community at MyGreatWorld.com adds with Iceland another country to its free, fast & rapidly growing online-platform of the world.
Blessed with the warm North Atlantic Current at its doorstep, Iceland could be called the 'hot spot' in the regions of the Arctic. The island - which is the 2nd largest in Europe - is also the 5th most productive country in the world regarding the per capita GDP and Iceland is also rightfully famous for its unrivalled geology and locations to make every photographer's heart pound with joy:
Eldfell, Hekla and Laki are just three of the more well known volcanoes on Iceland and together with the countless rivers, waterfalls and hot springs they are a reason both, for the geothermal independence of Iceland as well as for its natural beauty and diversity that is so often praised by impressed visitors.
As the sturdy Icelandic Pony is often seen on Iceland's rolling hills of grassland which cover roughly three quarters of the landmass, flocks of sea-birds inhabit the steep coastline with its infinite fjords and hidden bays.
Iceland is a photographer's dream come true. With MyGreatIceland.com now opened for the public, the MyGreatWorld-Project takes another giant step, inviting all fans and travellers to share their impressions of and with the world.

And it is the whole planet Earth, www.MyGreatWorld.com aims to document: Every notable spot, each place of interest and even the very streets users are living in -- as seen today and in past times. It is a complex and intricate task, yet remarkably supported by MyGreatWorld's latest and enhanced design:
At the main page of www.MyGreatWorld.com users now find a reduced and well-planned menu without dispensable and unwanted gadgets or pop-ups. All elemental functions are within easy reach and it is not before the choice of a country that the second (and more detailed) menu expands, allowing new users to register and old users to login.

Any further description a user enters will be additionally indexed for key-words. The same goes for the photo's title. Structures and designs are straightforward and comprehensible.

The advanced search, on the other hand underlines the fact that the sites of MyGreatWorld.com offer more than a mere pool of pretty pictures: The Advanced Search allows for combinations of various search-parameters including the time of the capture, the motive, the spot, key-words in title or description and even the filtering for a certain photographer.
"The site lives from the users' engagement and from the belief that on an international level there are no 'mundane' or 'mediocre' photos: The world in all its facets is very well worth seeing and what's 'interesting' is in the eye of the beholder..."
With MyGreatWorld.com Marco Stuewe and Thorsten Scherff prove once again that a free and fast service can become an alternative to commercial websites and that a functional, well developed layout helps to effectively categorize uploads, to provide access to the data inserted and -- in case of MyGreatWorld.com -- to communicate the beauty of the world.

Press Release MyGreatParaguay
Even today there are still countless unique places in Paraguay yet untouched by visitors and exceptional landscapes are waiting to be unveiled by photographers.
With Paraguay landlocked quite in the heart of South America, tourism took its timfe to discover the countries overwhelming beauty and cultural wealth. Even today there are still countless unique places yet untouched by visitors and exceptional landscapes are waiting to be unveiled by photographers.
Paraguay is decidedly twofold: The eastern region's green countryside and dense forests form the lively part of Paraguay, featuring the boiling capital Asuncion as well as the vast majority of the country's 5.7 million citizens. In contrast to that the peace and serenity of the western region inspire those in search of calmness and uncorrupted nature and wildlife.
Whatever the reason for a visit to Paraguay, photos & information from residents and those who know the spot are always welcome, both, to make the best out of a trip and not to miss the secret splendour every location holds: What's worth visiting in Asuncion? Where to stay in Pilar? What to do in Concepcion? What to avoid in San Lorenzo? Users may depict their recommendations on MyGreatParaguay.com - For tourists. For residents. For friends. Worldwide.
The change of Paraguay over the centuries and even over the last decades and years is sometimes subtle (and sometimes not). It becomes obvious by comparing the chronological advancement in housing and construction and the varying styles in design and architecture. The further an observer is travelling back in time the more evident growth and progress become.
Combining these different approaches (to a vast mass of digital photography laying dormant on harddrives around the globe), www.MyGreatParaguay.com opens up its services to the community these days to build an online-database of literally any spot in this country. Press Release MyGreatBolivia
Just a couple of days after MyGreatWorld.com opened up Belgium to the community now Bolivia fills one of the few remaining gaps in the worldmap of MyGreatWorld.
Even though rich in natural resources Bolivia struggles hard to find its place in the centre of South America, being more famous for major archeological monuments than for the vast amounts of iron, magnesium or natural gas. Outstanding ruins from pre-columbian cultures and famous mines already known by the Incas are only the creamy top of the highlights waiting to be discovered by visitors.
Bolivia is world-famous for its varied and distinctive folklore with some of the annual regional carnivals being No. 1 events in South-America.
Geographically Bolivia offers a surprising variety of different landscapes. Within the Andes and Altiplano about 80% of Bolivia's population lives today but Llanos and Yungas, too, offer a compelling background for inspiring captures.
Whatever the reason for a visit to Bolivia, photos & information from residents and those who know the spot are always welcome, both, to make the best out of a trip and not to miss the secret beauty every location holds: What's worth visiting in El Alto? Where to stay in La Paz? What to do in Oruro? What to avoid on Cochabamba? Users may depict their recommendations on MyGreatBolivia.com - For tourists. For residents. For friends. Worldwide.

Press Release MyGreatBelgium
Tourists have long ago discovered the cultural riches and original hospitality making Belgium a perfect country for families as well as for backpackers who often praise the open-hearted cordiality of the Belgian and their unsurpassed passion for strong and spicy beer in the same breath.
Geographically divided into the Anglo-Belgian Basin, the Paris Basin and the Hercynian Orogenic Belt, Belgium offers scenic variety and natural beauty to visitors and travellers from around the world.
Whatever the reason for a visit to Belgium, photos & information from residents and those who know the spot are always welcome, both, to make the best out of a trip and not to miss the secret beauty every location holds: What's worth visiting in Brussels? Where to stay in Ghent? What to do in Liege? What to avoid in La Roche? Users may depict their recommendations on MyGreatBelgium.com - For tourists. For residents. For friends. Worldwide.
The change of Belgium over the centuries and even over the last decades and years is sometimes subtle (and sometimes not). It becomes obvious by comparing the chronological advancement in housing and construction and the varying styles in design and architecture. The further an observer is travelling back in time the more evident growth and progress become.
Combining these different approaches (to a vast mass of digital photography laying dormant on harddrives around the globe), www.MyGreatBelgium.com opens up its services to the community these days to build an online-database of literally any spot in this country. Even the very streets users are living in are subject to continuous changes - and to make these trends visible is one of the goals of the site.
Uploading photos to MyGreatBelgium is map-based, fast and easy allowing the user to add new spots to the database (cities, points of interest, landscapes) on the fly. To make the database work, users are asked for the time (year or even better: year & month) and a category their picture fits in best. Any further description a user enters will be additionally indexed for key-words. The same goes for the photo's title. Structures and designs are straightforward and comprehensible without popup-windows or superfluous gadgets.
Is there a typical architecture in a town? Which hotel is it advisable to stay in? What's a commendable cafe, a museum worth seeing or a beautiful landscape in a spot? The photos might also depict details of a (not) recommendable archaeological site, a folkloristic event, an interesting building or even ‘just’ the own road for those fortunates living in Belgium.
Users are invited to give a helping hand and insider-guide to future visitors - and maybe even an eye-opener to residents living nearby.
Retrieving information from the database demonstrates that the MyGreatWorld-Project offers more than a mere pool of pretty pictures: The Advanced Search allows for combinations of various search-parameters including the time of the capture, the motive, the spot, key-words in title or description and even the filtering for a certain photographer.
Users find at all the sites of MyGreatWorld.com a solid framework to enrich with their photos, recommendations and opinions. The site is a young project and there is a lot of space yet to be filled. This also means users can still be the first to add a new spot and to present the flair of a place to the world, the ambassador for a town, landscape or favourite point of interest.
"The site lives from the users' engagement and from the belief that on an international level there are no 'boring' or unspectacular photos: The world in all its facets is very well worth seeing and what's 'interesting' is in the eye of the beholder..."
Descriptions are fine. But hand in hand with pictures, they are better. And at MyGreatWorld.com users might use the combination of both.

Advanced Photo Search
The Advanced Search is a mighty and unique tool to search the database:
Users can for example search for pictures in the categories 'Beach, Coast & Port' and 'Sports & Activity' taken in August in the year 2005 in France, in the city of Lyon that were uploaded by user ffranz101 containing the keywords 'boat' and 'red'.
By using these options it also gets possible to search locations systematically for changes in the run of the years.

Where to stay in Paris? What to do in Sydney? What to avoid in Rome? Users may depict their recommendations on MyGreatWorld.com. For tourists. For residents. For friends. Worldwide.
Users find at MyGreatWorld.com a fast and lean framework to enrich with their photos, recommondations and opinions. A map-based navigation offers an easy access to the regions of our planet. Structure and designs are straightforward and comprehensible without popup-windows or superfluous gadgets.
The specific feature of this site, however, is the classification-option: Each photo can be assigned to given categories (gastronomy, hotel, art, nature,…). In combination with the option to date the capture, this forms a mighty tool to actually retrieve ordered and well-assorted first-hand information!
Is there a typical architecture in a town? Which hotel is it advisable to stay in? What’s a commendable cafe, a museum worth seeing or a beautiful landscape in a spot? The photos might also depict details of a (not) recommendable show, a folkloristic event, an interesting building or even ‘just’ the own road.
Users are invited to give a helping hand and insider-guide to future visitors - and maybe even an eye-opener to residents living nearby.
MyGreatWorld.com is a young project and, naturally, there is a lot of space yet to be filled. This also means, everyone is invited to be among the first to add a new spot and to become a pioneer to present the flair of a place to the world, the ambassador for his/her town, landscape or favorite point of interest.
MyGreatWorld.com lives from the users’ engagement and from the belief that on an international level there are no ‘boring’ or unspectacular photos: The world in all its facets is very well worth seeing and what’s ‘interesting’ is in the eye of the beholder…
Descriptions are fine.
But pictures are better!
And at MyGreatWorld.com users might use the combination of both.
Welcome to our offical company blog
This is the official company blog where we like to publish all information regarding to www.mygreatworld.com. Whenever there is something new on the webpage, any important changes are made or any press release has been published, you can find all necessary information here.
What's this all about?
The platform and framework www.MyGreatWorld.com provides serves one main reason:
www.MyGreatWorld.com is a visual database of locations.
This is great for travelers. Making plans for holidays sometimes proves to be unexpected hard work: In contrast to the pictures in the advertising glossy magazins the real place often turns out to be some dirty and f*cked up location in the middle of nowhere (or right in the centre of everything).
Therefore finding reliable information turns out to be the linchpin and challenge in every holidaymaking-strategy and photos made by residents or fellow traverlers help immensely.
But MyGreatWorld.com offers more than that: Within the upload-procedure the users insert their pictures in a coherent framework of regional and contextual categories that gives an easy access to key-information.
Who are the founders? When Marco Stuewe and Thorsten Scherff called MyGreat into life their aim was to establish an open and non-commercial platform for every user to share his/her impressions of any place on earth. They wanted to create a database for all the international main destinations which would allow for a simple and fast access both to pictures of a place or landscape and to user-comments on the respective location.
In the course of planning this project, however, they soon had to discover that there were far more spectacular places in the world than they had dared to imagine - ... and that some other fields of interest would round up their database-project nicely. Within a time span of just a few days more than 150 internet-domains were thought of and registered and are by now constantly and freely offered to the community for the benefit of everyone.
